Victorian Poetry

The Corinthia Hotel London dons a new look today, but the architecture still exudes the Gothic feel

One of London’s hottest property’s right now, the Corinthia Hotel London is high on the radar of the capital’s well-heeled for good reason. Once the site of the grandiose 600-room Hôtel Métropole, built in 1885, the recently refurbished property located minutes from Charing Cross station, Trafalgar Square and the National Gallery, still has the original, regal Victorian exterior with an equally impressive classic-meets-contemporary interior design.

Top-hatted, tail-coated doormen greet you before you step in to the Lobby Lounge, where your eyes will be drawn up to the stunning ‘Full Moon’ chandelier, created by Parisian designer Chafik Gasmi. Aside from this striking showpiece, the property has a fantastic art collection of 250 specially commissioned pieces by contemporary British artists displayed throughout the hotel.

Complementing the 294 rooms, 40 suites and seven penthouses, the hotel features two world-class restaurants – Massimo Restaurant& Bar — serving up divine, modern Italian, while Northall celebrates the best of British cuisine with Michelin-star winning Chef Garry Hollihead at the helm. With the extraordinary ESPA Life Spa, it’s really no wonder the hotel received the distinguished accolade of AA Hotel of the Year in 2015-2016.

We loved

The flagship four-storey ESPA Life Spa is seriously impressive. From the phenomenal facial and full-body treatments, including a medical massage programme, to the pre and post-treatment relaxation spaces.

Highlights include sleep pods and an extensive thermal floor with a glass amphitheatre sauna, vitality pool and heated marble lounge chairs to unwind fireside.

We liked

Walking to Northall for breakfast through the hotel’s bespoke flower shop, where all the elaborate floral arrangements come to life, is a vibrant and fragrant start to the day that is instantaneously mood-enhancing.

Remember to…

Stop in to the Garden Lounge to meet Cigar Sommelier, Manu Harit – the youngest cigar sommelier with the elite qualification of High Certificate and title Master of Havana Cigars. The well-stocked humidor has more than 53 cigar varieties and a rare selection of accompanying beverages to enjoy in this al fresco setting with fire places for an extra cosy appeal.
