Each year brings with it something new, something old and something extraordinary. With the end of 2016, we bring to you some of the most hilarious, ground-breaking and amazing things that broke the Internet!
The game, launched in July 2016, brought with it an advent of craziness. Becoming as popular as ‘Candy Crush’ and ‘Angry Birds’, there were as many as five million people who downloaded the game. In their hunt to ‘catch ‘em all’, places of prayer became popular, as they became PokeStop. People, while playing the game, discovered dead bodies in unsuspecting places and that wasn’t the end of it. John Mayer shelled out actual currency for game extras, Joe Jonas and Ansel Elgort became NYC gym trainers and Justin Beiber joined other players to hunt for a rare pokemon at Central Park.
Harry Potter and the Cursed Child
With the last book released in 2007 and J.K. Rowling stating that she won’t write any Harry Potter books in future, Potterheads from across the world thought that with the end of the movie series, the magical world will come to an end. But 2016 came as a jackpot of surprises. Besides the release of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, a two-part play, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, was staged in London. For those who couldn’t go to London, a special rehearsal script edition was released. Written by Jack Thorne, it was based on a story written by Rowling. Across the world, fans rejoiced.
This year took a major departure from your average goody two shoes Superheroes, all thanks to our favourite Merc with a Mouth’s cinematic return. Having disastrously portrayed in X-men Origins: Wolverine, Ryan Reynolds returned in this revamped version, this time as a titular character, instead of a villain. The project was green lit due to the fan interest based on the leaked test footage shot by actor Reynolds and director Tim Miller. The R-rated antihero was among the highest grossing movies of the year. Not only is the second movie under production, but even other production houses are giving their heroes an R-rated edge.
Queen Elizabeth turns 90
The longest-reigning British monarch hit another record this summer. She turned 90. Having already surpassed Britain’s longest serving monarch – her greatgreat- grandmother Queen Victorialast year – Queen Elizabeth’s birthday celebration took place in the grounds of Windsor Castle. Born on April 21, the official birthday was celebrated on June 11. The 90-minute celebration included 900 horses, 1,500 participants, latest video projection, LED effects and electrical lighting. The result was a magical celebration the world would surely remember.
The performers included Dame Helen Mirren, Damian Lewis, Imelda Staunton, Kylie Minogue and Gary Barlow. Accompanying the Queen, was her family and the royal guest, King of Bahrain.
These were some of the major events that caught the media frenzy on 2016. With the New Year round the corner, we can only imagine the craziness and surprises 2017 has in store for us! Until then, watch-out for this space.
