From busy street food markets to traditional Thai restaurants, Bangkok has something to suit every palette
Thailand is known to be a haven for cashstrapped budget tourists but the pocketfriendly night markets and minuscule local restaurants are only the tip of the iceberg where culinary experiences in Bangkok are concerned. The city has an emerging luxury dining scene, which offers some great food options that can be coupled with exquisite experiences, like cultural shows and scenic tours of the temple-studded city.
Dine in style at Nahm Restaurant
Located on Sathorn Road, this place has an inviting ambiance. Nahm is the brainchild of Chef David Thompson, the man behind the splendid Long Chim restaurant in Singapore and Perth. Here you can sample authentic and spicy Thai dishes such as green mango salad with grilled meat and sour leaves and duck curry with banana peppers and shallots.
Tip: Their tropical fruit in scented syrup with Thai cupcakes will help you end the meal with a flourish.
Go traditional at Methavalai Sorndaeng
Indulge in a classic Thai luncheon at Methavalai Sorndaeng, a sophisticated yet old-world restaurant located right in front of the Democracy Monument. The beautiful white wrought iron chairs and the impeccably dressed lady singing romantic Thai favourites put you at ease. Open since 1957, Methavalai Sorndaeng is reasonably priced and the food here is beyond reproach, although on the spicier side.
Tip: Choose from a variety of curries, chicken and seafood dishes. Go for the tap tim grob in dessert
Try the exhaustive Siam Niramit buffet
Not only is the Siam Niramit show an unforgettable journey into Thailand’s multicultural past but the preceding buffet is also a real sensual delight. While all the dishes are not equally good, the spread of Thai and international dishes is so large that you’re bound to find something that catches your fancy. There are ample dishes to cater to vegetarians as well.
Tip: Chef Karen Anand has created an Indian counter as well featuring dal, vegetables, puri and chicken curry.
End with a mesmerising dinner cruise
Give your trip to Bangkok the perfect end with a dinner cruise along the Chao Phraya River. There are several cruise operators all of which offer luxury boats, on-board entertainment, buffet restaurant etc, but the Wonderful Pearl Cruise stands a notch higher for its stellar food.
Tip: Here you get to sample elegantly presented sushi platters and baked fish in pandan leaves.
